Each Word Section (i.e. each chunk that is separated by a Word Section Break) can have its own headers and footers.
Each section can also have one set of headers and footers for the 1st page in the section, and 1 set for subsequent pages in the section.
So let us imagine the simple situation where each chapter starts on a new page, and that you have - Section 1: all the material before your Chapter 1 - Section 2: chapter 1 - Section 3: chapter 2
Then I suggest that you first set up your Chapter 1 headings as follows (I only mention headers here, but if you also heave footers, create/modify each footer at the same point as the equivalent header).
- If Section 2 (Chapter 1) only has one page, then temporarily insert a page break so that there is more than one page in the section.
- click in the Section 2 header (and/or footer) and ensure that "Different First Page" is checked.
- Click in the header for the first page of the section, and ensure that "Link to Previous" is not highlighted.
- Delete everything in the header (this is not quite the same as "no header" but it's probably the nearest we're going to get)
- Click in the header for the second page of the section, and ensure
that "Link to Previous" is not highlighted. - Ensure that the material you want in the header (including your STYLEREF field) is there.
Next, go through all subsequent sections: - click in the section header and ensure that "Different First Page" is checked - in the first page header, ensure "Link to Previous" is highlighted - Click in the subsequent page header (If there is only one page, create a second one temporarliy) and ensure that "Link to Previous" is highlighted. This assumes that all the differences between one chapter and the next are going to be handled via your STYLEREF field (and perhaps other fields such as { SECTION }). Otherwise, you will need a different header for each chapter's "subsequent pages", and to ensure "Link to Previous" is not highlighted.
Next, go to Section one and create whatever headers you need (you don't say whether for example, you need different first page headers and subsequent page headers in there).
Be careful when adding or modifying section structure after that - Word tends to impose "link to previous" by default, for example. If you can use VBA, it is sometimes best to create a small macro that will go through the document (typically starting with the last section) re-imposing whatever structure you want.
